A group of Denver Republicans took part in the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival race at Sloan’s Lake Park in Denver over the weekend, but they say they won’t return next year because organizers told them to remove a “Trump 2020” flag.

“Just because we had a banner out doesn’t mean we should be discriminated against,” said Megan Azzolina, one of the participants.

According to Azzolina, the Denver Republicans – who compete as the Water Elephants – were told to take down the Trump flag because it’s not inclusive. She says several groups displayed banners, but the festival chose to single out them.

Organizers, however, said teams were told that flags like the one the Water Elephants displayed are not allowed in the pre-race area, where teams organize before a competition. Teams sign pledges to keep political and religious messages out of this zone, said festival spokesperson Tesia Chen.
